How to grow a rose from a cutting or a bouquet of flowers at home

Seedlings purchased in the distribution network do not always take root or turn out to be not at all the variety that was originally intended. Therefore, many gardeners grow roses from cuttings, but not all of them succeed.

I will talk about proven methods of growing flowers from bouquets or country neighbors cut from a bush. These methods are more effective than seed propagation, since cuttings can be rooted at home on the windowsill all year round, and not just in the spring and summer.

  1. Germination temperature. Night values should not fall below +18º C, daytime values +24…+26º C.
  2. Neutral ground. It is better to breed roses by cuttings in poor substrates, the best option is a mixture of equal parts of earth and sand.
  3. Humidity. The optimal values are 80-90%. The indicators are determined approximately by the degree of fogging of the greenhouse.

Propagation of roses by cuttings from a living bush

Late warm spring and early summer are the most natural times for rooting. There are several ways to grow flowers in your garden bed using the stems of freshly cut plants.

Rules for the preparation of planting material

  • Cut rose shoots for cutting cuttings early in the morning or closer to dusk.
  • Choose branches for germination without flowers - those that have already faded, are about to bloom, or well-developed lateral processes.
  • Cut the stems into segments about 15 cm long. The handle should have 3-5 live buds and a few leaves.
  • Make cuts with a very sharp tool, cut the upper part across, closer to the kidney, the lower part at an acute angle.
  • To avoid moisture loss, cut off excess leaves. It is also better to cut the spikes of the lower part.

To accelerate germination, many guidelines recommend keeping cuttings in root-forming preparations such as Kornevin. I often grow roses without them or use honey water (0.5 teaspoon per glass).

On a note: signs of maturity of stems for cuttings are dark green, semi-cured structure, well-breaking thorns.

Growing roses in the garden

For rooting, prepare a substrate mixture from equal parts of garden soil and sand, spill it with a dark but transparent solution of potassium permanganate. Dig rose cuttings at a strong slope, water, cover with a glass jar or half a plastic bottle.

The depth depends on the number of buds and the length of the stem segments: if there are three mouths, drop them to a depth of 1-3 cm, if 4-5 - by 5-7 cm.

After 12-14 days, start accustoming rose cuttings to the environment - remove the greenhouses daily, first for 15-20 minutes, then for a longer period, after a month, remove them altogether. Rooting occurs after 30-45 days, by autumn the cuttings release shoots with leaves.

How to sprout rose shoots in potatoes

The method is more suitable for growing in garden plots than at home. During rooting, the potato provides the cuttings with a moist environment and the supply of nutrients. Landing in stages:

  • Harvested cuttings of roses 18-20 cm long without leaves and thorns stick into potato tubers with liquidated eyes.
  • For planting, prepare holes or a groove 15 cm deep. Fill the bottom with sand, lay potatoes and dig in so that the upper buds are above the ground.
  • At the time of rooting, provide cuttings with greenhouse conditions - cover them with banks.

Using this method, do not overdo it with watering, otherwise the potatoes may rot and the seedling will die.

Note: when growing roses in potato tubers, it is useful to feed them weekly with sweet water - 1-2 teaspoons per 250 ml.

How to grow roses from holiday bouquets

At home, you can quite successfully germinate bouquet flowers. The percentage of rooting depends on three main conditions:

  1. Kind of roses. Roses of local origin are best propagated by cuttings, since high Ecuadorian, Dutch and Kenyan ones are treated with preservatives. For the same reason, any roses from flower baskets, floral arrangements and bridal bouquets do not root well.
  2. growing season. The highest chances are for spring and summer bouquets. The lowest are in the autumn and presented before the New Year holidays.
  3. The time the roses spent in the store. To avoid the loss of presentation, roses are placed in preservative solutions.

Therefore, if the bouquet presented by March 8 began to fade so quickly that you did not have time to enjoy it, do not rush to get upset. The rapid drooping of local roses may indicate their naturalness.

Preparation of cuttings

You should not wait until the bouquet dries up - as soon as the heads begin to droop, start preparing for rooting:

  • cut flowers, buds, you can thorns, be sure - the leaves of the lower part;
  • select healthy sections of the stem of medium thickness, 15-25 cm long;
  • cut into cuttings with 3-4 intact buds.

If there is any doubt, the prepared segments of the stems can be kept for a day in a solution of potassium permanganate, and then rooted.

Note: to increase the number of roots, it is better to remove the thorns on the rose handle. Top - carefully cut off, bottom - break to the ground. At the site of the wounds, the regeneration process starts, and additional roots always develop.

Five rules for growing roses in water

  1. Use a dark glass or plastic container.
  2. Pour only boiled water; for disinfection, you can throw a charcoal tablet.
  3. The liquid level is not higher than 2-3 centimeters.
  4. Do not change the water, but add as it dries to the original height.
  5. When roots form, immediately transplant the rose into a pot or soil (depending on the time of year).

First, a callus forms on the cut of the cutting, then the first roots appear. This process is quite lengthy and takes up to 2 months. If the segment of the stem began to turn black, then it can be thrown away.

Rooting in the ground

Prepare the substrate - a mixture of earth and sand and plastic cups. Instead of traditional soil, you can use vermiculite, which absorbs and releases moisture well. I also had a positive experience of getting roots in clean wet sand.

Be sure to make holes in the cup for drainage. Then proceed in the following sequence:

  • pour the substrate into the container, the layer thickness is about 3 cm;
  • soak the mixture with water, wait until excess moisture leaves through the holes;
  • plant a cutting - the lower kidney should be in the ground, the middle one - immediately above its level;
  • cover the containers with plastic wrap, put them on a windowsill or under a lamp for germination.

If you grow a large number of rose petioles at home, it is convenient to use an aquarium. Cups are placed on its bottom, everything is immediately covered with a film on top, if necessary, lighting is organized. Inside, a favorable microclimate is formed for the germination of roots.

Successfully rooted plants should be immediately transplanted into a pot or into open ground. In the fall, young shoots are not planted in the garden - immature plants will not survive the winter.

Burrito - a universal method of breeding roses

From prepared cuttings with 3-4 live buds, cut the leaves, you can also remove the thorns. Wet newspapers or paper towels, wrap the stem segments. Place rolled plastic bags, put them in a dark place.

The important thing is the temperature. The optimal indicators should be within + 14 ... + 18º C. If it is colder, for example, then the roses will be at rest, the rooting process will be greatly slowed down. Higher temperatures are more likely to dry out or mold.

Bags should be checked weekly, if necessary, the paper should be sprayed with water. The first roots can form in 3-4 weeks. This method is suitable for fresh cut roses and flowers from a bouquet.

  • Do not add manure top dressing to the substrate - plants can rot from too oily soil.
  • Cuttings from side shoots take root more successfully.
  • In the dark, roots form on shoots without leaves, if you left leaves, then light is needed for root formation.
  • Make the lower cut at an acute angle to increase the area of water absorption and root formation.
  • To reduce evaporation, the upper cut can be processed with a melted candle.
  • When choosing a garden site for growing, give preference to sheltered from the wind, well-lit, but not completely open places. The best option is under the trees, where the sun's rays pass through the foliage.
  • Rooted shoots are not planted in open ground at the end and middle of summer. They will not survive the winter, so in the fall they will have to be transplanted back into pots.

Why it is not always possible to breed roses by cuttings

The success of rooting depends not only on your experience and skill, but also on many other factors. One of the most important criteria is the quality of planting material.

Do not start your grower with imported bouquet roses - they have the lowest percentage of rooting, often it is not possible to get roots from such cuttings under any circumstances. Choose garden or fresh local flowers, try different ways - and be sure to succeed!
