How to put mustard plasters on your back: procedure, algorithm for the procedure, indications and contraindications. How long do mustard plasters keep? How to put them correctly? How mustard plasters are placed on the chest

It is generally recognized that mustard plasters are one of the most effective cough suppressants. Their price is incomparable with modern popular pharmaceutical preparations for colds, which makes them more affordable for all people.

Almost all children who grew up in the Soviet and post-Soviet times at least once in their lives felt their effect on themselves. Recently, these patches have not lost their leadership position in the fight against cough. The effect of them is usually described as something burning and "burning", so it is forbidden to put them at an elevated body temperature, it should not exceed 37 degrees.

But how to put mustard plasters correctly and what recommendations must be followed? We will consider these and other questions in more detail in our article.

Instructions for use

Setting mustard plasters takes little time. Most people think that this procedure will take at least an hour, but in practice it will take no more than 20 minutes. There is a widespread myth that the type of cough determines how to put a mustard plaster. In fact, mustard plasters should be used equally for both wet and dry coughs. They can also be used as an anti-inflammatory agent for pneumonia, before the procedure it is necessary to consult with your doctor. They can cope with headaches and pain in the heart area.

In order for mustard plasters to have their therapeutic effect, they must be supplied in accordance with the instructions. It is necessary to prepare the following elements for the procedure:

  • mustard patches;
  • a container with water of optimal temperature - approximately 43 ° C;
  • towel;
  • baby cream or any vegetable oil;
  • cover.

The packaging with mustard sachets purchased at the pharmacy must be unpacked, then dipped for about 10 seconds in a dish of warm water, and then immediately applied to the patient's skin. A towel is placed over the patches, and the person must be carefully wrapped in a blanket, bedspread or blanket.

There are certain recommendations on the time during which you need to keep the bags on the body: from 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the form of the disease. With a dry cough, the patch should be kept for at least 10 minutes, but not more than 25 minutes. The used patch cannot be reused.

If the patient cannot tolerate the “burning” effect of the agent at all, then it is recommended to remove the patches, since individual intolerance is possible. But it is easy to confuse allergies with the usual panic that arose in a patient, so for those who are not allergic to mustard plasters, but the effect of the drug is unbearable, you can put gauze between the skin and the patches.

At the end of the procedure, the cards must be removed and the body of a child or an adult should be carefully wiped with a clean towel, and then the skin should be moistened using vegetable oil and the patient should be wrapped in a blanket again.

The sequence of how to put mustard plasters for bronchitis is no different from staging for pneumonia. You need to put the patches either between the shoulder blades or on the chest, avoiding the heart area.

Where exactly to put mustard plasters and how often?

Before starting treatment with mustard plasters, care must be taken to ensure that the area on which the sachets will be applied is clean, there are no wounds, cuts and other skin defects in it.

So, how and where to place the cards correctly? For a cold, this remedy is placed either on the chest, or on the upper back, or in the area between the shoulder blades or under them. But sometimes the patch is attached to the soles of the feet or calves. Socks must be worn over the cards.

It is recommended to put patches on the back in the presence of respiratory diseases. If there is a sore throat, then put mustard plasters on the chest. With high blood pressure, they are used on the calves, with a headache - on the back of the neck. Therefore, the answer to the question of where to put mustard plasters depends directly on the disease that a person suffers from.

How often can you put mustard plasters? They are highly discouraged for continuous use. The maximum number of applications of these bags is 4 days, that is, if the patient has a severe cough, then mustard plasters are put every day for 4 days once a day.

If there is no improvement in health on the first day after the procedure, then the use of this method of treatment should be suspended. It is possible that such therapeutic measures for a person will not have an impact due to the individual characteristics of the organism, or the disease has already passed into a more serious stage.

It is necessary to control how many times mustard plasters were placed, since excessive passion for this self-treatment can lead to side effects in the form of allergies.

Usually, mustard plasters are put on children when there are signs of a cold, but people often have the question: “Is it possible to put mustard plasters on adults?” The answer, of course, is an unequivocal yes. In adults, a migraine may appear, blood pressure may rise, a cough may occur, which mustard plasters can easily cope with.

Why use such funds, if at the moment you can buy a lot of tablets and syrups in the pharmacy, the use of which does not take time? Mustard plasters are made on the basis of a natural component and have gained their popularity due to a really effective result.

Modern drugs can be addictive, and their price reaches high levels. The procedure time for an adult is 10-15 minutes, if an unbearable burning sensation occurs, the bags must be removed, and the patient's skin should be treated with warm water, then lubricated with baby cream.

It must be remembered that putting mustard plasters on the chest, back and other parts of the body is strictly prohibited in the presence of an acute respiratory infection.

Its hallmarks are fever, poor health and chills.

It was said above when mustard plasters can be used, but there is a list of diseases for which they are categorically contraindicated:

Also, you can not use during pregnancy, while breastfeeding and in the presence of tumors.

Thus, the question of how to put mustard plasters has been analyzed in detail. During the procedure, you need to carefully monitor the sympathy of the patient. There can be no doubt about the effectiveness of the method of therapy.

how mustard plasters, and medical banks- These are non-drug methods of treatment that are used as adjuvant therapy for diseases of the lungs and bronchi. Each person should clearly understand that these methods cannot be the main treatment.

The impact of mustard plaster occurs at the reflex level. If a person is given medical banks, then their influence is comparable to autohemotherapy . Opinions are divided about the use of these methods at the present time. Some people assume that these treatments are outdated and there is no point in using them. But many still use them, sincerely considering both banks and mustard plasters to be effective methods to alleviate the condition with lung diseases. However, it is necessary to clearly know when it is possible to put mustard plasters in adults, as there are clear indications and contraindications for the use of both mustard plasters and medical jars. They will be discussed in this article.

How mustard plasters and banks work

Medical banks

They are small glass vessels with a rounded bottom and thickened edges. The capacity of such a vessel can be from 30 to 70 ml. They are used to reduce the severity of pain, reduce the severity of inflammatory processes.

How do banks operate?

When oxygen is burned in the jar, a negative pressure (vacuum) is created, and human skin, as well as subcutaneous tissue, are sucked into the jar. As a result, blood rushes from the underlying organs and tissues. The smallest blood vessels are torn and numerous hemorrhages appear in the skin. Gradually, the disintegration of blood occurs, the product of which are biologically active components. Then they are absorbed into the blood, and this stimulates individual tissues and organs. As a result, the severity of pain decreases, inflammatory processes in the body resolve.

mustard plasters

Mustard plasters are a tool that is a sheet of thick paper on which a layer of fat-free powder made from mustard seeds is applied. Mustard plasters are also produced in the form of a package of porous cells, inside of which is mustard powder.

How do mustard plasters work?

When mustard plaster comes into contact with the skin, mustard essential oil irritates it. Due to local hyperemia, the vessels expand, the blood flow in this place is activated. Skin receptors are also activated, as a result of which the level of excitability of the sympathetic department of the central nervous system increases. There is an accumulation sympathetic and in the blood, as a result of which the phagocytic reaction of the immune system is enhanced.

As a result, the patient's pain level decreases, tissues warm up, their trophism increases and the protective function is activated. There is also an active passage of the mucous secretion of the bronchi.

Contraindications

Banks or mustard plasters, indications and contraindications. They must be known and taken into account. So, both medical banks and mustard plasters cannot be placed in such cases:

  • At elevated body temperature, as well as for another day after it has returned to normal.
  • With a variety of skin diseases, especially if traumatic and pustular lesions develop.
  • If there are signs of increased bleeding.
  • During, as well as when a young mother is breastfeeding her baby.
  • People with cancer.
  • At lungs, spine.

When does the effect appear?

It is quite understandable that patients are interested in whether jars and mustard plasters are effective in and other diseases of the respiratory system. First of all, it must be taken into account that, of course, it is impossible to treat such serious diseases exclusively with the help of these methods. It is important that the diagnosis be correctly established and an adequate treatment regimen prescribed, which, among other things, will include antibiotic therapy, if we are talking about pneumonia or acute bronchitis .

However, the answer to the question of whether it is possible to put mustard plasters as an adjuvant therapy in bronchitis is positive. But still, it is worth consulting with a doctor first, who will tell you how and when to put mustard plasters and jars in order to get the maximum effect.

Also, with lung diseases, patients are prescribed massage, breathing exercises, because these procedures can significantly alleviate the condition of patients.

As a rule, the patient notices an improvement if 2-3 procedures with jars or mustard plasters were performed in parallel with the main treatment. However, if there is no positive dynamics after several procedures, then there is no need to carry them out further.

These procedures are also used as additional methods for pneumonia. As a rule, pneumonia is severe, and there is a high risk of developing a variety of complications in this disease. Therefore, it is very important not to worsen the patient's condition, which is why it is necessary to ask the attending physician whether it is possible to put cups for pneumonia, in each specific case. After all, there is a possibility of rupture of layers of lung tissue located nearby, if you put banks in case of pneumonia.

It is worth agreeing with a specialist whether it is possible to put mustard plasters for pneumonia, and whether there is such a need.

In the case of bronchitis, banks should be used only during the period when the patient begins to recover, and he has no symptoms of intoxication of the body, respiratory failure, for at least several days.

Approximately the same approach should be to the use of mustard plasters - it makes sense to use them already at a time when a person with pneumonia or bronchitis begins to recover. The patient should not show any signs intoxication organism. Mustard plasters should not be placed at a temperature. For parents who ask if it is possible to put mustard plasters at a temperature for children, it is important to remember that this should absolutely not be done.

If we are talking about an adult patient, and at what temperature they can be placed, it depends on his general condition. It is optimal to initially obtain permission from a doctor for their use.

The use of mustard plasters is advisable if a person is worried - strong and painful. Very often, such a symptom manifests itself in people who have been ill bronchopneumonia , pneumonia , as well as bronchitis , for a long time even after the person has already recovered and feels satisfactory.

This procedure stimulates the elimination of congestion in the lungs, since warming with the help of mustard plasters draws blood through the anastomoses into the subcutaneous vessels from the affected area of the lung. Stimulates this method and the activation of sputum excretion from the bronchi, helps to strengthen.

With bronchitis, after the temperature has returned to normal, after a day it is already possible to put mustard plasters. With pneumonia - two days after the temperature has become normal.

How often can you put mustard plasters for adults and children? Do not use this procedure more than once a day. If we are talking about a child, then mustard plasters are put once every two days. This procedure should not be used more than 5 times.

How to put cans on your back correctly

It is important to clearly understand why they put banks on their backs and how to do it. They will help you understand how to put cans on your back, videos that explain the features of this procedure, which are very numerous on the Internet.

Before using this method, you need to find out from your doctor if it is advisable to do this. As mentioned above, the answer to the question of whether it is possible to put cans at a temperature is negative. And about whether it is possible to put cans with bronchitis, whether it is possible to put cans when coughing, the attending physician should still tell.

How to put banks on the back correctly? They are placed depending on where the focus of inflammation is localized.

With bronchitis, cough, pneumonia, they are placed under the shoulder blades and between them, on the lower back, under the collarbones. It is important to choose those areas where there is a large layer of fat or muscle. It is necessary to avoid places where the bones protrude, and also not to affect the area of the projection of the heart. 5-6 cans are placed on each of the sections.

To carry out the procedure, you need to take:

  • a set of jars, dry and clean;
  • tweezers or clip;
  • alcohol;
  • cotton wool;
  • petrolatum;
  • matches.

Before the procedure, a person should lie on his stomach, his back is wiped with alcohol and lubricated with petroleum jelly. Cotton wool is wound onto tweezers or a clamp, which is then dipped in alcohol and, after squeezing a little, is set on fire.

It is most convenient to hold the jar with your right hand, quickly insert the clamp with cotton wool into its cavity with your left hand and apply it to the skin after 1-2 seconds. If the jar is placed correctly, then the skin and fiber under the skin are absorbed into its cavity. This is noticeable in the form of a towering roundness. At the same time, the skin becomes purple, but the person feels not pain, but tissue tension.

After all the cans have been placed, the person is covered with a blanket, and he lies for the first time from 1 to 5 minutes, then 15-20 minutes. As for how often banks can be placed, the procedure is carried out once every 2-3 days, but each time other areas of the skin are involved.

To remove the jar, you need to gently tilt it on its side and press on the skin near the edge of the jar. So air will get inside, and the vacuum will disappear. After the procedure, the skin should be gently wiped and the person left to lie down for one hour. Banks leave purple or purple-red spots on the back, which dissolve over time.

It is important that before putting medical banks, indications and contraindications must be taken into account. How to put banks on your back, the benefits and harms of this procedure are described in many medical sources.

For bronchitis or pneumonia, you need to put mustard plasters on the upper part of the sternum, on one or both sides of the chest, under the shoulder blades and between them. Those who are interested in where to put mustard plasters when coughing should take into account that they are also placed on the heels and calves.

You should not put them on the protrusions of bones, birthmarks, other formations on the skin, as well as on the area of the heart, mammary glands, kidneys.

It is necessary to put them so that the mustard plasters do not touch each other. To carry out the procedure, you need to prepare:

  • a container with water at a temperature of about 45 degrees;
  • napkin;
  • towel;
  • mustard plasters (it is better to take packages).

How to put mustard plasters when coughing? The patient should lie on his back or stomach, depending on where the mustard plasters will be placed. A bag or sheet with mustard powder is completely dipped in water, pressed against the skin, slowly smoothing. Next, you need to cover the place with mustard plasters with a towel, after which the patient should lie down for 5 to 15 minutes. Repeat this procedure for 4-5 days.

If mustard plasters are placed when coughing for children 3 years old or people with sensitive skin, then a gasket should be left between the mustard plaster and the skin - a gauze napkin or several layers of bandage to prevent skin burns.

Is it possible to put mustard plasters on children, the doctor should tell. There are special children's packages that have a less aggressive effect.

If done correctly, a person begins to feel warm after two minutes. Sometimes a burning sensation is felt. But even if such a feeling is absent, this does not mean that the mustard plaster is not of high quality or does not work well. In any case, it should not burn much, hurt.

After the specified time has elapsed, you need to remove the sheets or packages, wipe the skin with a damp, clean cloth to completely eliminate traces of mustard on the skin.

You should not wipe the skin with alcohol, it is quite possible to use a light baby cream for wiping. Redness in the places where the procedure was performed can remain for up to several days. But if the skin is bright red, this indicates that the person has an intolerance to the procedure.

When should these methods not be used?

In addition to the above contraindications, the use of such methods should be avoided if during the procedure a person feels severe discomfort - physical and psychological. They are also canceled if very severe pain and burning appear.

Hello dear readers. Along with the onset of cold weather, the season of colds, which everyone is so afraid of, is gradually approaching. But a cold will overtake only those who did not have time to prepare their immunity for such difficulties. One way or another, the risk of catching a cold exists for everyone, the only question is how quickly your body can cope with the task. Depending on the individual characteristics of the organism, each person suffers the disease in his own way. Someone is tormented by subfebrile temperature and severe sore throat, and someone suffers from a debilitating cough that does not give rest day or night. In general, during the day you can still somehow get distracted from this unpleasant symptom, but at night all attention is focused on coughing, because of which it can intensify. The problem of an incessant cough is solved by using mustard plasters, which will quickly calm his attacks.

Thus, you will be provided with sound sleep at night, which is so necessary to restore the body's strength during the period of illness.

Mustard plasters are placed not only to get rid of the main symptoms, but also in order to speed up the process of removing sputum from the lungs. Otherwise, the mucus remaining in the respiratory organs can provoke serious inflammatory processes.

What is the help of mustard plasterers?

The main advantage of this tool is that it is applied directly to the chest, more precisely, to the organs located in it. Mustard plasters contribute to the deep heating of the respiratory system, which, in fact, will help to cope with a painful cough.

Please note that this procedure is carried out only in case of a prolonged cough. Therefore, in the initial stages of the disease, it is best to fight with general use drugs.

In addition, mustard plasters are also used as a prophylaxis in case of severe hypothermia of the body.

Indeed, in this case, there is a risk of developing pneumonia, and this process is better to prevent.

Mustard plasters are used in the fight against such diseases:

- bronchitis;

- bronchopneumonia;

- tracheitis;

- infections of the upper respiratory tract.

The medicinal properties of mustard plasters lie in the fact that the composition of the mustard itself is rich in a high content of essential oils, which contribute to the expansion of blood vessels, which gives a warming effect. The fact that they are applied only to the chest area does not mean that they act exclusively on the bronchi.

All airways are warmed up, both lower and upper. Therefore, it makes sense to use mustard plasters as an aid against the common cold and sore throat.

Mustard contains special substances called "glucosides", which just help to achieve an irritating effect. Through enlarged pores, the product penetrates the skin, while accelerating metabolic processes in the body.

Due to its warming effect, this remedy is prescribed not only for colds, but also for neuralgia and even sciatica. The blood rushes to the inflamed areas of the body, which greatly accelerates the recovery processes of the body.

In what cases should mustard plasters be placed?

Such a remedy will bring a positive result in bacterial diseases, the consequence of which is a dry or wet cough. If sputum is excreted regularly, then the use of mustard plasters will not be mandatory.

They can only be used to speed up this process. But with a dry cough, this procedure should be carried out until the mucus begins to be excreted.

Remember that at temperatures exceeding 37.5 degrees, the use of mustard plasters will be strictly prohibited. Metabolic processes in the body are already accelerated, and the use of auxiliary agents can lead to irreversible processes.

Also, do not use warming agents for bronchial obstruction. Against the background of such a syndrome, the use of mustard plasters can lead to the development of asthma, the attacks of which are quite life-threatening.

Diseases accompanied by bleeding of the respiratory organs are also forbidden to be treated with means with a warming effect.

Operating principle

In fact, a mustard plaster is a small paper bag containing crushed dried mustard seeds. Until recently, this is what mustard plasters looked like.

But now more and more often you can find new generation mustard bags, one part of which has the usual paper structure, and the other consists of foil.

Thus, there is a process of reflection of the temperature, which is directed exclusively to the heating of the body. In general, there is some logic in this, but so far there is no evidence of the high efficiency of these mustard packets.

Mustard plasters have the following medicinal actions:

- when the mustard bag comes into contact with moisture, essential oils are released;

- the use of such a remedy leads to skin irritation, which leads to an acceleration of blood circulation;

- an increase in temperature in the respiratory tract leads to liquefaction of sputum, as well as their further removal from the respiratory system;

- irritation of skin receptors leads to an acceleration of the heart, which, in fact, contributes to the rapid flow of blood to inflamed tissues;

- along with an increase in the speed of blood circulation, other processes in the body are accelerated.

So, a sufficiently large amount of adrenaline accumulates in the blood, which only enhances the protective function of the body.

How to put mustard plasters when coughing for an adult. Where to put mustard plasters when coughing

Before starting the procedure, it is necessary to shake the mustard plasters properly so that the contents are evenly distributed throughout the package.

Pay attention to the integrity of the package itself, because in case of any damage it will not be possible to use it.

Do not allow mustard to get on the skin, as this can lead to burns. And in case of any damage to the skin, mustard plasters also cannot be placed, because the substance can penetrate into the wound, which will cause not the most pleasant sensations.

For a successful procedure, we need:

- A vessel with water, the temperature of which is 45 degrees.

- Large terry towel.

In some people, mustard can cause allergies, so before starting the procedure, it is necessary to conduct a small test for the reaction of the body.

If an allergic reaction nevertheless manifested itself, then the patient will be prohibited from carrying out such a procedure.

The area to be treated must be wiped dry beforehand.

If mustard plasters are placed on a child, then the place of fixation is best covered with one layer of paper napkins. The fact is that the skin of the child is still quite sensitive, and this can lead to the formation of a burn.

During the procedure, it is important to monitor the patient's condition. If a person complains of severe pain in the area of fixation of mustard plasters, they must be urgently removed from the surface of the skin. The affected areas of the skin are treated with petroleum jelly immediately after removing the mustard packs.

Mustard plasters for different types of cough

Before proceeding with the very use of mustard plasters, you need to familiarize yourself with the basic rules for the procedure. Here it is important to correctly position the sachets themselves, so that you can achieve an acceleration of sputum discharge.

Please note that the product can be on the surface of the skin for no more than 15 minutes, otherwise quite severe irritation or even burns may appear on the skin.

Therefore, try not to overdo it so that the treatment of one symptom does not lead to the occurrence of a mass of side effects.

Cough treatment with mustard plasters consists of several actions.

  1. Place the mustard packets in a small bowl of water for about 10 minutes. During this time, the mustard will warm up properly and swell to the desired size.
  1. At the end of time, the packages are removed and applied to the body of a sick person.
  1. In order to protect the heated body from possible drafts and exposure to cool air, it is necessary to warm it with a towel. The whole body of the patient is wrapped in a warm blanket.
  1. The compress is removed after a maximum of 15 minutes. The time of the procedure may vary depending on the age and individual characteristics of the organism.
  1. Mustard, which nevertheless managed to seep through the bag, must be carefully removed from the skin with warm water.
  1. Immediately after that, wipe off excess moisture from the skin. After all, the remnants of water on a heated body can lead to a deterioration in a person's condition.
  1. A small layer of vaseline ointment is applied to dry skin, which will help restore it from the irritating effects of mustard.

A cup of herbal tea or a hot bath will help enhance the effect. But do not forget that at a high body temperature, warming procedures will be prohibited.

Therefore, in the event of an increase in temperature, it is necessary to put the patient to bed and lightly cover with a blanket. Please note that the patient needs to be provided with a warm drink, because hot drinks can only aggravate the situation.

It is permissible to put mustard plasters for five days, after which the treatment should be stopped.

It will be enough two procedures a day in order to completely get rid of the cough. But a long course of treatment can lead to skin damage. And remember, it is important to know how to properly put mustard plasters when coughing for adults and children.

Fighting dry cough

If it is quite easy to cope with a wet cough even in a couple of days, then a dry cough will have to be treated for at least a week.

But here it is important to determine the cause of such an inflammatory process. After all, if it consists in an infectious lesion of the body, then mustard plasters will only accelerate the process of spreading the infection.

Therefore, you can put mustard plasters only if it is of bacterial origin. In order to finally say goodbye to this unpleasant symptom, you will need to carry out at least 6 procedures.

By the way, the method of applying mustard plasters to the patient's feet will be no less effective. So, warming up the body will begin with the feet, which are always cold in the first place.

How to put mustard plasters when coughing

Depending on the disease, compresses are placed on the chest and on the back. But there are cases when it becomes necessary to install them immediately on both sides of the chest (back and chest). Where to put mustard plasters when coughing, a doctor can advise you, depending on the disease.

But in this case, additional fixation of both pairs of packages will be required. This can be done with a bandage or gauze.

But you can enhance the effect of mustard plasters with the help of a simple cling film, which can simultaneously serve as their fixative.

As for the duration of the procedure, it all depends on the degree of redness of the skin surface.

On which part of the chest are mustard plasters placed?

In the case of coughs, mustard packs are placed on the back or sternum. But if you are worried about a runny nose, then mustard plasters will only be effective if they are placed in the calf muscles.

But with severe nasal congestion, experts recommend fixing the bags on the feet with the same cling film or gauze.

Over them, woolen socks are worn on the feet, which will provide warmth to the feet. But before carrying out such a procedure, make sure that there are no cracks on the heels. There are several effective ways to cope with a lingering cough.

  1. If the cause of the cough is bronchitis, then mustard plasters are placed simultaneously on the back and chest. At the same time, they are placed between the shoulder blades. But on the front of the chest, packages are fixed slightly below the collarbones. It is important to place compresses at a certain distance from the heart area.
  1. Dry cough can be cured by placing mustard plasters between the shoulder blades. But the procedure will be possible only if the temperature does not exceed 37.5 degrees.

Duration of the procedure

On average, mustard plasters can be kept for about 10 minutes. But if you have too sensitive skin, then you can limit yourself to five minutes. You can determine the level of sensitivity by observing the reaction of the skin to mustard packets.

Of course, if you endure, then you can leave mustard plasters on your body for 20 minutes, but this is done only in extreme cases, when the cough does not leave the patient for quite a long time. But then you need to monitor the condition of the skin throughout the procedure.

The time of the procedure may vary not only depending on the reaction of the skin, but also on the age of the person:

- for babies under three years old, such compresses are placed for a maximum of 3 minutes;

- from three to seven years, you can increase the time to 5 minutes;

- starting from the age of eight, you can keep mustard plasters for about 10 minutes.

How often can you put mustard plasters?

In this case, the procedure can be carried out no more than twice a day. You should not abuse them, because too frequent repetitions can lead to overheating of the body, which will not have the best effect on weakened immunity. In addition, exposure to mustard on the skin can lead to burns.

For people with sensitive skin, one compress per day will be enough. Well, if this type of treatment does not bring any results even on the fifth day, then other methods of treatment should be selected.

How to put mustard plasters for a child - the use of mustard plasters for children

The skin of children is too sensitive to various external irritants, which can result in an allergic reaction or mechanical damage in the form of burns.

Therefore, a mustard plaster soaked in hot water is applied only to a cotton cloth placed on the child's chest.

It is advisable to use this type of treatment only from the age of six, because before this age it is impossible to predict the body's reaction to such a remedy.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Mustard packets are placed in warm water for half a minute.
  1. We put them on the back of the baby and cover with a towel.
  1. After ten minutes, remove the compress and remove the remaining mustard with warm water.
  1. We cover the skin with a small layer of Vaseline.

The use of mustard compresses during pregnancy

In general, it is undesirable to treat a cough with mustard plasters in this case, because they contribute to an increase in the tone of the uterus. Therefore, such procedures are prescribed only in extreme cases and only by a doctor.

Contraindications and side effects

Remember that the use of mustard plasters for infectious diseases will not only be unsuccessful, but also dangerous to human health and life.

And it is prohibited to use such a tool in the following cases:

- allergies;

- tuberculosis;

- pulmonary bleeding;

- early damage to the skin;

- psoriasis.

Ignoring contraindications can lead to severe skin irritation, allergic rashes and even burns. Therefore, you should not independently increase the duration of the procedure.

Mustard plasters for coughing can only be used as directed by a doctor and only subject to clear rules for use. When used correctly, such a remedy will help to cope with even the most severe cough, which will also save you from possible complications.

Mustard plasters are a cheap and effective cough suppressant. Many people have often experienced the power of these patches. Over the past decades, they have proven themselves from the very best side. But at the same time, not a small number of patients became aware of their "burning", "sharp" and "biting" nature. In this regard, mustard plasters should not be used when coughing if a person has an elevated body temperature. Before this, the heat must be brought down to at least 37.3 degrees, otherwise the body will experience a heavy load.

Features of use

Mustard plasters are not recommended to be placed regularly. A maximum of them can be applied when coughing for 4 days in a row. At the same time, it is desirable to use them every day, once without interruption. In the event that the child or adult does not feel better after such treatment, it is better to stop these procedures. Maybe the patient's body is not sensitive to such therapy, or the existing disease has grown into something more.

If mustard plasters are repeatedly put on a child or an adult (every day several times for a long time), this can lead to the formation of severe allergic reactions or individual intolerance.

Listen to what Dr. Komarovsky says about this, maybe you will change your mind about putting them on.

Indications

A remedy such as mustard plasters is allowed for use only with a wet or dry cough, especially if this deviation is protracted and severe. They are also actively used as an anti-inflammatory external drug in the event of many other diseases (neuralgia, pneumonia, myositis, bronchitis, headache, laryngotracheitis, etc.).

In rare cases, such an effective remedy is used for angina pectoris. However, it is recommended to do this, depending on the severity of coronary heart disease.

Contraindications

Mustard must not be used for coughing if such a disease is accompanied by acute respiratory infections that have begun to manifest themselves actively (for example, body temperature has risen, weakness has appeared, and chills).

The following deviations are contraindications to the use of such "burning" patches:

  • increased individual sensitivity to the agent;
  • any skin diseases, in particular pustular, at the point of contact with the cards;
  • neurodermatitis;
  • pregnancy;
  • lactation period;
  • asthma;
  • weeping eczema;
  • psoriasis;
  • tumor diseases.

Staging rules

For greater effectiveness, mustard plasters should be placed correctly when coughing. And where to apply them, so that the result of the treatment is not long in coming, we will consider a little lower.

In order to correctly place medical cards, first you need to prepare all the required attributes. To do this, take the mustard plasters themselves, a shallow bowl of warm water, the temperature of which does not exceed 43 ° C, a terry towel, a fat body cream or ordinary vegetable oil, as well as a blanket or a thick blanket.

Before placing mustard plasters on the patient's body, it is advisable to completely dip them in a bowl of water and hold there for no more than 5-8 seconds. After that, the impregnated cards must be immediately applied to the skin. On top of them, be sure to place a terry towel, and wrap the patient well in a blanket or thick blanket.

The time that mustard patches should be on the body of an unhealthy person is individual. However, there are some recommendations. If the cards are installed correctly, then it is advisable to keep them for about 5-15 minutes (with a dry and strong cough for at least 9-10 minutes), but not more than a quarter of an hour. If the patient cannot tolerate the "burning" and "biting" effect of this remedy, then it can be removed after 5-7 minutes.

At the same time, it is extremely important not to confuse the proper effect of mustard cards with a strong allergic reaction or individual intolerance. If there is no allergy, but the burning sensation is unbearable after 2 or 3 minutes, then to reduce it, it is allowed to put a single layer of gauze or a thin napkin between the burning remedy and the body.

At the end of the procedure, the used agent must be removed from the patient, and then gently and carefully wipe the skin with a clean towel, lubricate it with oil and wrap the child or adult in a warm blanket again, providing him with complete peace. At this moment, freshly brewed tea with milk or raspberry juice with linden honey will be especially effective.

Location

In no case should mustard patches be placed on sensitive areas of the body or on those places where there is any damage to the skin.

So, where can they be placed for effective impact? Most often, such a cough remedy is placed on the chest, upper back, between and under the shoulder blades.

Also, these burning cards are applied to the feet of both legs or to the calves (you can do both there and there at the same time). On top of the applied remedy, it is recommended to wear warm and thick woolen socks. Unofficially, this technique is called "mustard boots."

In rare cases, mustard patches are also applied to the surface of the palms under the thumb. According to experts, this zone corresponds to the lungs.

Can children use

Such a remedy is allowed to be used to treat a child if he is strong in spirit. However, it is desirable to reduce the time of this procedure to 4-6 minutes.

Mustard cards for children can be replaced with an appropriate wrap. To do this, you need to prepare dry mustard (1.5 large spoons) and a small film. The product should be poured with warm water, covered with a lid and infused for 20 minutes. After that, it is required to pour 1 liter of non-cool boiling water into the mixture with a pungent odor. In the resulting liquid, it is necessary to moisten the film, and then wrap the baby's chest with it and wrap it well. Further, the procedure is similar to the same one that was presented just above.

Mustard plasters for bronchitis: is it possible to put, how to put and where (photo)

With the help of mustard plasters, you can get rid of bronchitis, pneumonia, colds, pleurisy.

Bronchitis should be understood as a disease, which is based on the inflammatory process of the mucous membrane of the bronchial tree. The appearance of the disease is promoted by endogenous and exogenous factors affecting the mucous membrane.

Medicine distinguishes two types of bronchitis:

  1. spicy;
  2. chronic.

In the acute form, diffuse inflammation occurs. It is manifested by hypersecretion, which provokes coughing and copious sputum production.

If bronchitis proceeds in the chronicle, there is a restructuring of the excretory processes. The functioning of protective mechanisms is disrupted, and sputum production increases.

Bronchitis can be caused by viral or bacterial factors. Not the last role is assigned to fungi and allergic agents. The illness begins with a dry, intense cough that occurs at night. After that:

  • mucus is actively expelled
  • hyperemia develops;
  • there is a general intoxication of the body.

The duration of bronchitis is from a week to two. If you do not cope with the disease in its acute stage, there is a risk of the inflammatory process becoming chronic.

It is very difficult to recover from such a pathology.

The main properties of mustard plasters

Previously, mustard plasters for bronchitis consisted of flour, mustard and water. Such a mixture was applied in a thin layer to the fabric and applied to the integument of the back and chest. Modern mustard plasters can be purchased ready-made. The therapeutic mixture in them is located between two sheets of paper. To put mustard plasters for bronchitis, they are placed in warm water, and then applied to the desired place.

As a result of chemical reactions occurring on the patient's skin:

  1. receptors are irritated;
  2. blood circulation increases;
  3. metabolism is accelerated.

In addition, under the influence of mustard plasters, protective and regenerative mechanisms are activated that help fight cough. Due to the expansion of blood vessels, coughing becomes more productive, the lumen of the bronchi gets rid of an excess of sputum.

If there is no mustard plaster at hand, the application can be made with your own hands. You will need to take:

  • 2 teaspoons flour;
  • 2 tablespoons of mustard powder;
  • warm water.

Powder is placed in a plate, water is gradually added until a homogeneous gruel is formed. Such homemade mustard plasters are left to infuse for 2 hours. Then add flour, mix thoroughly.

The resulting mass is applied to prepared sheets of thick paper or cotton fabric. The same sheet is applied on top. Mustard plaster is ready. It can be used for adults and children.

How to bet?

Before treatment, you should know how to properly put mustard plasters for bronchitis. In fact, everything is very simple. To do this, you need to pour the product with a small amount of warm water. After 5-10 minutes, mustard plasters are placed on the chest, back. In this case, the heart area should be avoided. By the way, the pepper plaster when coughing also requires the same.

Mustard plasters can sometimes injure the integument. The problem is especially relevant for young children and patients with too sensitive skin. To prevent this, protective material is used. Medical gauze and an additional layer of thick paper are well suited for this purpose.

After some time, the patient will feel a pleasant warmth in those places where the mustard leaves are applied. But they need to be removed only after 10 minutes or after the appearance of hyperemia on the skin.

You can not use mustard plasters for bronchitis, if the skin is damaged, it is inflamed. In this case, the progression of the disease may begin.

Instead of mustard plasters, children can make mustard wraps. Would need:

  • soak a piece of cotton fabric with a mustard solution;
  • squeeze and lay in the right place;
  • secure with another piece of fabric.

After the procedure, it is imperative to remove all remnants of mustard powder. To do this, wipe the skin with a damp warm towel.

Mustard powder treatment may not be suitable for everyone. So, the remedy is prohibited in case of an acute inflammatory process, elevated general body temperature, suspicion of oncological diseases or tuberculosis infection in adults.

Also, the method should be abandoned in case of an allergic reaction, cardiovascular disorders in the stage of decompensation, defects in the heart valve apparatus.

Mustard plasters should not be placed on children who are under 3 years old.

Mustard plasters are unsuitable for use if:

  1. powder falls off them;
  2. expired.

Good applications before wetting with water should be odorless when warming the chest when coughing.

Where to put mustard plasters for bronchitis? This is also a valid question. Since the disease develops in the upper respiratory tract, sheets should be placed on the upper back, near the supposed site of inflammation.

The ideal place for setting a mustard plaster is the upper part of the sternum and the interscapular region. If the impact occurs precisely on these areas, the metabolism is activated, and regenerative processes can be stabilized.

As noted, the mustard plaster is not placed on the area:

  • hearts;
  • kidney projections;
  • milk glands.

Skin after removal of mustard plasters should be moderately red. However, hyperemia of a bright scarlet color, blisters is unacceptable.

In this case, we are talking about individual intolerance or a burn.

Mustard plasters and pregnancy

Particular attention should be paid to pregnancy. In this special state, any irritating factors can cause the development of severe consequences. Therefore, a pregnant woman must weigh all the pros and cons of the procedure before using mustard plasters. Treatment should be carried out with extreme caution. Some doctors are completely against mustard applications and other similar warming procedures during pregnancy.

They can become a provoking factor:

  1. spontaneous abortion;
  2. start of preterm labor.

Doctors explain this reaction simply. In places where mustard plasters are placed, blood circulation is increased. In turn, there is an outflow of blood from the tissues of the uterus, a short-term oxygen starvation of the unborn child.

You should also be aware that some substances contained in mustard may themselves be a prerequisite for abortion.

Mustard plasters for bronchitis

Bronchitis is an inflammatory process that occurs in the mucous membrane of the so-called tracheobronchial tree. This disease belongs to the group of infectious, with it there is a strong cough, as well as intoxication of the body. To relieve these symptoms, there are various medical procedures, among which the time-tested method is mustard plasters for bronchitis. They are considered one of the most effective methods, as they warm up the sternum qualitatively, eliminating coughing.

Is it possible to put mustard plasters with bronchitis? With bronchitis, you can put mustard plasters, the only thing you need to follow is the technique of their setting, and also know if the patient has any contraindications to this procedure.

In the process of treating bronchitis with mustard plasters, congestion in the lungs is eliminated. This is due to the redirection of blood through the anastomoses - from the inflamed part of the lungs to the vessels under the skin. Mustard plasters also accelerate the process of removing sputum from the bronchi and strengthen the immune system.

Training

Preparation for the procedure is as follows: you need to take a blanket, a towel, the mustard plasters themselves, and pour warm water into a bowl. The skin on the back and chest should be cleaned and slightly moistened with water. Mustard plasters are placed when the patient is in a supine position - they are first placed on the chest, and then on the back.

Mustard plasters for bronchitis are placed on the chest (below the collarbone by 5-10 cm; it is important to try to ensure that the area above the heart is minimally affected), as well as the back (mustard plasters are placed between the shoulder blades and under them - this increases the effectiveness of the impact).

Mustard must not be placed on birthmarks, mammary glands, protrusions of bones, kidneys, heart area. They also need to be placed so that they do not touch each other.

Technique: how to put mustard plasters for bronchitis?

How to put mustard plasters for bronchitis? The application technique is quite simple:

  • First, you need to dip the mustard plaster in a bowl of water for a few seconds, and then apply it to the skin on the chest or back;
  • After all the mustard plasters are placed, it is necessary to blot each one with a damp cloth or sponge;

  • Next, cover the area with the imposed mustard plasters with a dry towel;
  • Then the patient should be covered with a blanket.

After the mustard plasters are removed, it is required to carefully and carefully remove the remaining mustard from the skin in order to prevent unnecessary skin irritation. Then the patient must be wrapped again in a blanket and allowed to lie down for a while.

Mustard plasters for bronchitis in children

Mustard plasters for bronchitis in children can be used, but it must be borne in mind that the procedure should be shorter than in adults - only 4-6 minutes, no more.

With extreme caution, mustard plasters should be used if the child has obstructive bronchitis, since this form can cause the development of an obstructive syndrome with the development of asphyxia. Since this disease usually has an allergic nature, the use of mustard plasters can only aggravate the situation. Sometimes their use leads to the transformation of bronchitis into bronchial asthma - this is due to the fact that the secreted essential oils can usually provoke the appearance of allergic symptoms.

Children are not allowed to put mustard plasters on both their back and chest in one procedure, although there is no exact answer which of these places would be more effective. Therefore, to achieve the result, it is recommended to alternate: put one day on the chest, and the second - on the back, and repeat this every other day.

You can also use a simple mustard powder as a substitute - make a mustard bath in which the child can soak his feet. You need 100 g of powder per 10 liters of water, and the water temperature must be within 38°C. At the same time, you need to cover him with a warm blanket, and at the end of the procedure, put him to bed and give him hot tea to drink.

Mustard plasters for bronchitis in adults

The action of mustard plasters begins after 5-10 minutes (in general, this usually depends on their quality, as well as the condition of the patient's skin and his individual perception). Basically, mustard plasters for bronchitis in adults are placed for a maximum of 15 minutes. After removing them, the skin is wiped with a damp cloth, and then wiped dry. Next, the patient is wrapped in a blanket and left to lie down for a while.

Mustard plasters for acute bronchitis

Acute bronchitis usually develops as a result of SARS and influenza. Risk factors are: hypothermia, inhalation of harmful vapors or gases, smoking. Often this disease is preceded by repeated, inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract (eg, tracheitis).

In acute bronchitis, mustard plasters are placed on the upper chest, as well as on the area between the shoulder blades.

Mustard plasters for obstructive bronchitis

With obstructive bronchitis, mustard plasters are not recommended, but if you still decide to use them, you need to put them in the classic way: on the chest and back. A small child should be treated with the mustard wrapping method - a towel is moistened in a water-mustard solution, and the patient is wrapped with it.

How many days and how often can you put mustard plasters for bronchitis?

Mustard plasters for bronchitis can be placed no more than 4-5 days in a row, while the procedure cannot be performed more than 1 time / day. But it is better for children not to put mustard plasters daily - it is recommended for them to carry out the procedure every other day.

Contraindications

With the help of mustard plasters, bronchitis is often treated, but it must be remembered that there are some contraindications for their use. For example, it is impossible to perform such a procedure with tuberculosis, the presence of malignant tumors, and bleeding. Also, you can not use them as a treatment for children under 6 years old, because their skin is too thin and therefore prone to burns.

Consequences and complications

Mustard plasters for bronchitis can have the following complications and consequences:

  • The occurrence of burns on the skin;
  • Irritation of the skin due to an allergy to mustard;
  • If the mustard plaster is placed on the same part of the skin, pigmentation may occur.

For many decades, in the treatment of cough, such a simple, affordable and cheap method as the use of mustard plasters has been used. Many people even have these pads at home all the time "just in case". However, is it always possible to put mustard plasters when coughing? When will this simple remedy be very effective, and when will it be completely useless?

What kind of cough put mustard plasters: dry unproductive symptom

Warming pads can be used in the fight against bronchospasm of a different nature. Do they put mustard plasters when coughing dry? Of course yes. However, the cause of the symptom should be diseases such as:

  • Tracheitis.
  • Bronchitis.
  • Acute respiratory viral infection.
  • Cold.
  • Flu.

In this case, as a result of water getting on the mustard powder, essential oils are released, under their influence the skin begins to warm up, nerve receptors are irritated. In the place where the overlay is placed, the following occurs:

  • Increased blood circulation.
  • Acceleration of metabolism.

This stimulates the rapid transition of dry bronchospasms to wet ones.

Do they put mustard plasters when coughing, if it has a wet character and is accompanied by sputum?

Doctors recommend warming procedures not only if the reflex spasms of the airways are unproductive. You can also put mustard plasters for coughing, accompanied by sputum. It is better to do this before going to bed, every other day for two weeks.

At the beginning of such treatment, it is necessary to be prepared for the fact that expectoration will intensify, as the “peeling off” of stagnant mucus will begin. It will be possible to observe its very active output.

Do mustard plasters help with a cough caused by allergic reactions, diseases of the cardiovascular, nervous system or stomach?

In order to effectively treat bronchospasms, it should be remembered that it makes sense to put mustard pads only when the symptom is caused by diseases that affect the respiratory system. If sharp spastic exhalations arose due to other ailments, then it makes no sense to carry out the procedure. Of course, you can put mustard plasters when coughing, there will be no harm from them. However, this will not bring benefits to the body, a positive result can not be expected, and the whole procedure will turn out to be a completely useless waste of time.

Do mustard plasters help with coughing if the patient has a fever?

When carrying out any warming procedures, doctors always emphasize one general and very strict rule - in no case should they be used by people with elevated body temperature. This directly relates to the use of mustard overlays. If the thermometer has exceeded 37.5 degrees, then it is strictly forbidden to set them.

Before using mustard plasters, you should definitely consult a doctor, find out how to use them correctly, how long the procedure should last, where you can warm up the body. These indicators depend on the disease and the individual characteristics of the patient. Patients who experience a skin reaction in the form of red spots are advised to put mustard pads not on bare skin, but through gauze.

Mustard plaster for dry cough

Mustard plasters have been used for many years to combat coughs. They are used with equal success for the treatment of both adults and children. There are no contraindications for their use with dry cough, but there are some subtleties of their use that should definitely be taken into account.

Protracted dry cough very often accompanies various acute respiratory diseases, bronchitis and tracheitis, in which body temperature can rise to 38-39 degrees. In such cases, the procedure cannot be performed, as it can provoke a further increase in temperature and a deterioration in the patient's well-being. Experts do not recommend the use of mustard plasters if the patient's temperature has risen above 37.5 degrees.

You can not put them with allergies, bronchial asthma and tumor diseases. And also this method is not used to treat patients with weeping eczema, neurodermatitis, psoriasis and pustular diseases in the place where they come into contact with the skin.

Do not use mustard plasters for more than four days in a row. After all, this can lead to the development of allergic reactions and irritation of the skin. If after a four-day course there was no improvement, then it is better to consult a doctor again.

Where can mustard plasters be placed?

With a prolonged dry cough, you can place them on the chest or on the back, between and under the shoulder blades, as well as in those places where the doctor advises. If the patient is concerned about tracheitis, then they are recommended to be placed on the sternum. If the patient has bronchitis, it is better to place them between the shoulder blades. Alternation is also acceptable, that is, one day they are placed between the shoulder blades, and on the other - already on the sternum.

With a dry cough of any etiology, you can make the so-called "mustard boots". To do this, mustard plasters are placed on the calves or feet of both legs and warm woolen socks are put on top.

How to carry out the procedure correctly?

You will need a bowl of warm water (about 45 degrees), petroleum jelly, a towel, a blanket. Within 5-10 minutes, mustard plasters are wetted in water, and then applied to the body of the sick person. A towel should be placed on top, and the patient should be wrapped in a blanket.

After 5-15 minutes, you need to remove the mustard plasters, and wipe the skin with a towel and grease with vaseline oil. Then you need to wrap up the patient again and give him tea with honey or raspberries.

How to treat a cough in children with mustard plasters?

The skin of babies is very delicate and thin, therefore, in order not to provoke its irritation, it is necessary to lay a thin cotton fabric between the mustard plaster and the body. So that the child does not act up during the procedure, you need to distract him, for example, read him a fairy tale.

For children, the procedure time should be reduced depending on their age. So, kids from one to three years old put mustard plasters only for 2-3 minutes, and children from 4 to 7 years old - for 3-5 minutes. And guys 8-12 years old can hold out for 7-10 minutes. If during the procedure the baby began to complain of pain and severe burning, and irritation or severe redness occurred on the skin, it is worth stopping the procedure, informing the doctor about it.

Mustard plasters are a popular therapeutic agent that is used for a whole range of diseases, including hypertension, pain of various etiologies, tissue bruising. Often they are used for coughing, and although the opinions of experts on the effectiveness and safety of this method are diametrically opposed, it is useful for everyone to know how to use them correctly.

Let's figure out what mustard plasters are, how to put them on an adult and a child, what contraindications and precautions exist for this procedure.

Mechanism of action and types of mustard plasters

Mustard plasters are of three types:

  • patches measuring 12.5 by 8 cm;
  • paper bags with 4 cells;
  • fabric bags, in which, in addition to mustard powder, there are plant extracts and dry pepper.

After getting water on the mustard plaster, it begins to release essential oils. Interacting with the skin, they have a distracting, analgesic, antispasmodic, vasodilating effect. From the heat transmitted to the skin, there is an increase in the protective forces of the immune system due to the activation of phagocytes.

Cough mustard plasters help both by accelerating the healing process and by the distracting effect of a slight burning sensation on the skin. In addition, warmth in the chest area thins phlegm and makes coughing easier.

What types of cough should be used for mustard plasters

Cough can be pathological, that is, provoked by a disease, or physiological. With a physiological cough, treatment, including with the help of mustard plasters, is useless and impractical.

Thermal mustard applications are used in the treatment of the following diseases accompanied by cough:

  • bronchitis;
  • pleurisy;
  • tracheitis;
  • bronchopneumonia.

Mustard plasters are rarely prescribed for a wet cough, since the procedure provides liquefaction of sputum, which is not required in this case. If they are still used, they must be fixed on the back, in the area of the lungs and bronchi, avoiding the area of \u200b\u200bthe spine.

Mustard plasters with a dry cough, on the contrary, are fixed on the frontal part of the body, in the area between the neck and the body.

It is important to understand that the procedure only alleviates the symptoms and speeds up recovery, but does not eliminate the root cause of the pathology.

Contraindications

There is a list of factors that prevent the procedure:

  • fever (body temperature above subfebrile condition);
  • pregnancy and lactation (any heat compresses are prohibited);
  • asthma (high risk of an attack);
  • neoplasms (including benign ones);
  • skin damage (rash, wounds, burns);
  • risk of internal bleeding (taking coagulants, reduced prothrombin index).

It is important to take into account the risk of an allergic reaction. A food allergy to mustard is quite rare, but if there was such a precedent, mustard plasters should not be used.

How to put an adult

As a rule, an adult can perform the procedure on his own, but if you need to put the application on your back, you need to ask the help of another person.

Before the procedure, you need to prepare:

  • mustard plasters themselves;
  • a bowl of warm water (temperature about 40-45 degrees);
  • warm towel.

It is better to fix the application in the evening before going to bed, lying in bed. Mustard plasters are placed in a container of water for 10 seconds, then fixed on the skin and covered with a towel.

The fabric bag is used in a similar way: the product is first shaken so that the contents are evenly distributed inside, placed in water for 20 seconds. The body is wiped with a damp towel, after which a tissue bag is fixed on the skin.

It is better to put paper mustard plasters on dry skin, however, if there is a tendency to skin irritations, especially if you want to put mustard plasters on your chest, you need to lubricate the body at the place of fixation with oil or petroleum jelly.

How long you need to keep mustard plasters on the body depends on the sensations of the person:

  • A slight tingling at the site of the application is normal, but if the patient experiences severe discomfort, the procedure should be stopped immediately.
  • On average, for setting mustard plasters when coughing, instructions for use require the duration of each procedure up to 15 minutes, usually 7-10 minutes.

After completing the procedure, mustard plasters must be carefully removed from the skin and discarded. The body should be wiped with a towel to remove the remnants of the application agent. If a fabric version was used, the remnants will have to be washed off with water. Having lubricated the skin with cream or petroleum jelly, you should lie down in a warm bed.

How to put a child

Mustard plasters when coughing for children are placed according to a scheme similar to the application for adults. The issue of age restrictions is relevant:

  • Some pediatricians claim that mustard plasters can be used to treat children over two years old.
  • Other experts are convinced that mustard plasters are strictly contraindicated before the age of seven.

The final decision on the possibility of putting mustard plasters in a particular case should be a pediatrician.

Before the procedure, you need to take into account several nuances:

  • the skin of children is more delicate and sensitive, therefore, before fixing the mustard plaster, you need to lubricate the body with vegetable oil or petroleum jelly;
  • if the child complains of a burning sensation during the procedure, it should be stopped immediately, and at the next attempt, put a gauze flap between the oiled body and the mustard plaster;
  • the duration of the procedure is determined by the age of the child: from 2 to 3 years, the application time should be a maximum of 2 minutes, from 3 to 7 years - 4 minutes, over 7 years - 7 minutes, if the burning sensation does not force the mustard plasters to be removed earlier.

At elevated temperatures (even subfebrile), high risk of allergies or burns due to skin sensitivity, it is better to refuse this treatment method.

Where to put mustard plasters is a question, the answer to which depends on the symptom that should be eliminated in this way.

  • Typically, applications are placed in the back and chest, with the exception of the heart and spine.
  • Many parents prefer to put mustard plasters on their children's heels, but this method is effective for a runny nose, or rather, for nasal congestion.
  • To reduce the severity of coughing and thinning of sputum, it is better to fix the applications on the area where the lungs are located: on the back and on the chest.

Mustard wraps for kids

Useful and effective are not only traditional applications, but also mustard wraps. They have the same principle of operation, but the procedure requires a large flap of tissue, that is, the coverage area is much larger than that of several patches or paper bags.

  • For the procedure, you need to take a flap of natural fabric made of cotton or linen, wet it with water, wring it out thoroughly, transfer the contents of the mustard plaster to the fabric.
  • After that, wrap the baby's chest with a cloth for 5 minutes.
  • After the end of the specified time, the body should be washed with water, lubricated with any moisturizer or petroleum jelly, and then put the child in a hot bed.

Mustard wraps can not be carried out before the age of two. To reduce the risk of skin irritation, the body can be lubricated with oil before the procedure, but in general, a lower concentration of active ingredient with a larger applicator area reduces the risk of allergies.

Precautionary measures

The safety of the procedure is ensured by observing a number of precautions:

  1. Mustard plasters themselves must be of good quality. You should not make mustard powder applicators yourself, as you can exceed the concentration of the powder and cause a burn. They need to be purchased at a pharmacy, and when buying, look at the expiration date.
  2. Cannot be reused, the applicator must be discarded after use.
  3. Do not exceed the recommended procedure time: this will not improve or accelerate the therapeutic effect, but it can cause irritation or allergies.
  4. It is strictly forbidden to fix a warming application on the region of the heart and on the spine.
  5. Immediately after the procedure, you need to lubricate the skin with a moisturizer and lie down in a warm bed.

It is important to understand that mustard plasters are not a universal method of treatment, for some people it is not suitable. This manifests itself:

  • strong burning sensation;
  • irritation on the skin;
  • vegetative seizures.

In this case, you need to abandon the method of treatment in favor of other methods of therapy.

Thus, in the absence of contraindications, a person can try to alleviate the symptoms of a cold with mustard plasters. With a dry cough, they are most effective, the effect of their fixation can be felt immediately after the procedure. Unlike most cold remedies that require internal use (syrups, tablets), mustard plasters have a smaller list of contraindications and side effects, so their use is relevant both in therapy and in pediatrics.
