Fountain "Princess Turandot" in Moscow on Old Arbat: photo, description

The fountain "Princess Turandot" is a chamber monument made in a canonical manner. The attraction harmoniously fits into the architectural ensemble of the Old Arbat, there are always a lot of people here: someone makes dates here, someone is interested in the history of the object, and for someone the heroine of the iconic production is a good background for a photo. In any case, it is extremely difficult to pass by - and it is worth finding out why.

History of appearance

It all started in 1922, when the famous Moscow playwright Evgeny Bagrationovich Vakhtangov staged a fairy tale by the Italian writer C. Gozzi in the Arbat Theater. The performance was a resounding success: it gathered full houses, critics rated it as defining the future of theatrical art, and the main character of the legend - a wayward Chinese princess - became a symbol of the theater. Vakhtangov.

The plot of the tale is simple: the capricious, cruel, but incredibly beautiful Princess Turandot refuses to marry against the wishes of her loving father, Emperor Altoum. To fend off the inexhaustible stream of suitors, she comes up with an impossible task: each wooer must solve three of her difficult riddles. In case of failure, the candidate is sent to execution. So she killed many men in love with her, until the Tatar prince Kalaf, dressed as a poor man, comes to her. After several comedic and tragic ups and downs, everything ends with the triumph of love and a magnificent wedding.

Artists Yulia Borisova and Vasily Lanovoy, who played the main roles for a long time, were present at the opening of the memorial fountain in 1997. The fountain "Princess Turandot" was installed in the year of the 75th anniversary of the debut of the production and the 850th anniversary of the capital.

Description of the monument to Princess Turandot on the Arbat

You can easily find the fountain if you walk along the Old Arbat and get to the Vakhtangov Theater - right in front of it there is a large "pocket" - here is the princess coquettishly seated on the throne.

The author of the project was Alexander Burganov; the sculptor chose a classical compositional solution. The bronze figure of the majestic princess is located on the throne under the canopy and the vault of the arbor-rotunda; the whole group is generously covered with gilding. The sculpture rises above ground level due to the granite pedestal, which is parallel to the fountain. The whole structure is immersed in an oval-shaped bowl with comfortable seating sides.

In 2011, the statue was attacked by vandals: they sawed off her hand and part of her dress, apparently seduced by easy money on gilding. The missing parts very soon returned to their rightful place. With the onset of dusk, romance reigns near the monument: the sculpture is beautifully illuminated, and lovers often rest on the sides of the fountain.

The fountain was installed near the building of the Vakhtangov Theater in 1997 and was conceived as a monument to the performance of the same name staged by Yevgeny Vakhtangov in 1922; its installation was timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the first production.

The gray granite bowl of the fountain has an oval shape, its main decoration is a gilded sculpture of Princess Turandot, seated on a throne under a magnificent canopy. The pedestal on which the throne is installed is made in the form of a stylized gazebo-rotunda and hides the fountain installation, and the granite sides of the pool are raised and made in the form of a bench, which has become a popular place for photographing by the fountain. The composition is installed in a small recess on a semi-circular platform, raised above the street level by 3 steps, and fenced with concrete bollards. At night, the fountain and the figure of the princess are beautifully illuminated.

Unusual fountain-monument was designed by the sculptor Alexandra Burganova.

Princess Turandot

"Princess Turandot" - last lifetime performance Evgenia Vakhtangov, staged by him in 1922 at the Third Studio of the Moscow Art Theater on the Arbat (later - the State Academic Theater named after E.B. Vakhtangov).

Based on a fairy tale by the Italian writer Carlo Gozzi, it tells the story of a cruel Chinese beauty - Princess Turandot, who did not want to get married, but was popular with men. To turn away the suitors, the princess came up with an impossible task: she asked each of them 3 most difficult riddles, and if the man answered incorrectly, he was executed. Ultimately, after various comedic and dramatic situations, the action ends with love and a wedding.

The ironic tale was a huge success with the theatrical audience, and the image of Princess Turandot became a generally accepted symbol of the Vakhtangov Theater.

It is curious that the gilded princess from the Arbat turned out to be attractive not only to theatergoers and tourists who do not deprive her of attention while walking along the street, but also among vandals. For example, in 2001, her hand was sawn off, but the lost limb was quickly restored.

Fountain "Princess Turandot" installed at the building of the Vakhtangov Theater on Arbat Street, 26. You can get to it on foot from the metro stations "Arbatskaya" and "Smolenskaya" Filevskaya and Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya lines.
