Strong or weak character. How to develop a strong character

Hello! I'm already 30, but I just can't find myself, because I'm weak in spirit and character. I am quite a decent, handsome young man. Yes, and in relations with the girls, everything was not bad, but they always left me, precisely because of this reason. But it's not about them, it's about me. I am an adult, reasonable person and therefore I am not afraid to admit it to myself that I have HUGE PROBLEMS due to lack of self-discipline and weakness of character. girls (I mean a serious relationship). Help! Tell me what to do, where to start, it can't go on like this anymore! Of course, I won’t climb into the noose, but I can’t live in such a state anymore, everything somehow burdens me. Thank you!

Hello Denis! You are probably still a strong person if you can see in yourself what you think limits and hinders you; but it is important not only to see, but also to do something in order to help yourself. Believe me, no one will be able to start the movement except you ... The mere fact of accepting your shortcomings is not enough (and sometimes you know, many people attribute their problems to supposedly shortcomings, but sometimes it is useful to know and accept your weak and strengths, and adapt with them to this life, sometimes not everything can be changed, but it is important to learn to accept yourself and take responsibility for the relationship, and maybe then you will meet a person who accepts you). maybe just in a relationship they didn’t accept you as you are, and this does not mean at all that you need to adapt to someone, because even then it is unlikely that a person who rejects you will be able to accept. if you feel that you lack self-discipline - set yourself temporary goals (at first not so difficult and vital) and fulfill them - thus developing willpower. And under weak character it is difficult to understand what you mean (not the ability to make decisions, take responsibility for them, infantilism .....). In general, there is something to work on - you know, at a distance you can neither give you specific recommendations, nor figure it out and help you understand what is happening - so come - make up your mind - you can safely contact me - call - I will be glad to help you!

In such cases, people usually begin to work with a psychologist for a long time. A goal is set that you want to achieve and you sort out gradually, step by step, all the difficulties and problems that prevent them from being achieved. In this formulation, you have no purpose. You just described what you want to get rid of - from weakness of character, from weakness of spirit. From the situation in which the girls leave you and go.

I dare to suggest that you want to achieve strength of character and fortitude. Okay, so be it, but this is too general and vague goal. Different people mean different things by this. What does strength of character mean to you? What will change in life when you become strong spirit? Where will you be, what will you do? How will you feel it? Girls will stop throwing, what will happen instead of throwing? These and similar questions are asked by psychologists in order to clarify the goal. You can come with a goal and start working or dedicate 1 session to goal setting. If this method of work is interesting, please, you can come and we will work. You can see my site and ask any questions.

Hello Denis.

What you write about, unfortunately, is not resolved with a single letter. With this you need to work internally and the work is long. It is important to explore everything. Starting with what you call a weak character and how it manifests itself in your life, ending with how valuable (yes-yes!) This state is for you. After all, our body doesn’t do much for nothing. Perhaps you need to do just that for something internally. You can explore this and learn to interweave in a combination that is suitable only for you, the value of the current state and the value of the desired, in full-time work. I am working with similar requests.

If this is really important to you, I will be glad to help you.

Denis, I get the impression (of course, subjective) that something like you are being cunning ... Either “I am weak in spirit and character”, then “I am an adult, reasonable person” - 2 different pictures! I think that depending on the situation you change and that's great! Sometimes it is beneficial to be like that, and sometimes to others!

When "they (girls) always left me exactly because of this reasons", you specified because of what causes? Maybe because it's difficult to build serious relationships with "girls", they are still girls, not girls, not women!? Here you write "and in relations with girls, everything was not bad," i.e. the fact that they parted, in general, was not traumatic and did not work on the mistakes?

You ask yourself: "Tell me how to be, where to start?" Specify (for yourself) - where to start what, and what to "be" about? What do you want? Target? What is your point of view? What do you want to come to?

Important accept yourself with a "lack of self-discipline and weak character", having previously investigated with a psychologist where, in memory of whom, instead of whom you are with such a set of qualities! These are all your subpersonalities, they are valuable to you, this is YOU! Weakness = kind, flexible, gentle, loyal... Lack of self-discipline = free, agile, explosive, idea generator... Look for pluses in apparent "minuses".

And with girls - you are simply not ready to build relationships. So far... And the reasons have come up.

Steps

Work on the best qualities of your personality

Become more honest. Honesty is a key component of a person's character. Show others that you are an honest person and don't let your words diverge from your deeds. For example, if you're telling your partner that you'll be helping him more with his work, show that you're serious about what you're saying. You can start to take a regular interest in the progress of a large project that he is working on, or offer to take on the responsibility of organizing lunches for him at the workplace during especially busy periods of work.

    • You can also become more honest through more sincere behavior. Don't feel like you have to always behave in a particular way. Your reactions should be natural.
    • For example, you might say to your partner, "I'm sorry I didn't support you enough earlier. I think it's all because I miss you when you're at work."
  1. Use introspection. Introspection allows you to know yourself on a deeper level. When you achieve self-awareness, you will understand the course of your thoughts and your own reactions. A better understanding of who you really are can help you develop your own character. Set aside a little time each day for introspection. At the same time, you can ask yourself questions of the following type: "Why did I react this way to what Sveta said? How can I correct my own reaction next time in case of a conflict?"

    • Meditation is also great for increasing self-awareness. You can learn to meditate by downloading apps for your phone, by attending a meditation class, or by reading meditation books. You can even just try to sit quietly and see where your thoughts wander!
  2. Strengthen your self-control. You can develop self-control by making small changes in your daily life. For example, you can work on controlling your impulse cravings for snacks. When you feel like eating late at night, stop and ask yourself if you're really hungry. Then, instead of snacking, drink a large glass of water. You have the ability to consciously approach the issue of controlling your impulse impulses.

    • It's a good idea to get into the habit of making your bed every day. This will help you develop discipline that will come in handy in other life situations.
  3. Try to live with honor. Living by honor means being honest with your inner self. If your actions are not in line with your beliefs, then you will always have an unresolved conflict inside you. Remember and respect your personal values and principles in everyday life. Make decisions based on these principles and be resilient under pressure from others.

    • Do things that align with your values.
    • Think about how your decisions are in line with your beliefs.
    • Change habits that go against your beliefs.
    • Be honest.
  4. Take responsibility for your own mistakes and correct them. Everyone makes mistakes, but how you react to such situations shows your character. Admit honestly if you have done something, and try to take steps to correct the situation. Depending on the specific circumstances, you may be required to apologize. Otherwise, you will need to change your own behavior or fix what you have done.

    • Talk to the person affected by your actions to make a concrete decision.
    • Weigh possible ways correcting the situation.
    • If you make a mistake or hurt someone, admit the mistake and correct it. For example, you can say, "I'm sorry I borrowed your idea. I'm going to tell everyone that you were the original source of it."
  5. Learn to take risks wisely. There are many reasons why a person might take risks, including the desire to become more confident and find new ways to succeed. The risk can be considered considered only when you have weighed all the possible positive and negative consequences of your action. Don't do reckless things.

    • For example, you dream of creating your own photography studio. It would probably be unwise to suddenly quit your job and make yourself dependent on the newly created enterprise. A more deliberate strategy would be to gradually start small. Try working as a photographer on the weekends. As your undertaking develops, it will already be possible to think more seriously about devoting all your time to your favorite business.
  6. Be patient. Everyone gets impatient at times. Perhaps you even sometimes had to bite your tongue when a colleague could not absorb something right away. Developing patience will require some effort on your part. Start by trying to assess the situation through the other person's eyes. Try thinking like this: "Oh, maybe Masha doesn't understand what I'm explaining to her because she doesn't have a technical background like I do. I need to use less professional jargon in my explanations."

  7. Ask someone you trust to give you a description. Sometimes it is difficult to objectively evaluate yourself. If you're serious about getting better, try asking someone to describe you. This person must be honest and capable of constructive criticism at the same time.

    • Your best friend might be a good candidate. Address him: “Sergei, I am seriously striving to become a stronger person. Could you help me and name some strong and weak sides my character?
    • Thank you for your feedback and try to take action on some of the recommended changes.

Ability to empathize and express gratitude

    1. Learn to put yourself in the place of others. If you learn to empathize, you can better understand other people. You can strengthen your character by seeking understanding with people and helping them. Try to imagine what the other person is going through. For example, your friend may have recently lost a brother. Think about how he might feel and how you would feel if you were in his place. Try to think of ways to alleviate the condition of a friend.

      • You can even go further and try to experience exactly what the other person experienced. For example, your partner may feel frustrated that she has to do all the cooking herself. Try taking on cooking duties for a week to see what it is that makes her so stressed.
    2. Fight prejudice in yourself and other people. Everyone has certain conjectures and even prejudices in relation to other people. They can be both conscious and unconscious. For example, you can count people who only completed high school and did not receive vocational education, uneducated. Try to set your mindset on a more open path and start being more tolerant of other people.

      • Pay attention to your prejudices. When you catch yourself making conjectures, mark it for yourself. Being aware of potential bias is the first step in combating it.
      • When such thoughts hit you again, take action to change your way of thinking. Instead of thinking that “such a person can't be smart”, think: “Wow, despite the lack of professional education, he did an excellent job. It's impressive."
    3. Practice gratitude. Gratitude is considered an integral part of a strong character, as it demonstrates your awareness of the contribution made to the common cause by other people and surrounding circumstances. You can develop a grateful attitude by intentionally incorporating it into your daily life. For example, you can list three things at the end of the day for which you are grateful.

      • You can also start a diary for yourself in which you write down all the things for which you are grateful. There you can make appropriate notes throughout the day or just set aside 10 minutes for this in the evenings.
      • You could write in your diary: “Today I had the opportunity to volunteer at an animal shelter. I am grateful that I was able to do something constructive this Saturday morning.”
    4. Don't forget to express gratitude to other people. A grateful attitude to life has an external side. Don't forget to say "thank you" every time someone does something for you. In the same way, you can show your appreciation for those things that do not directly concern you.

      • For example, you might say to a colleague, “Thanks for bringing in a new client. Business growth benefits all of us.”
      • Gratitude can be more specific. Try saying, "I really appreciate that you fed me chicken broth when I was sick. You are so caring."

    Performing leadership functions

    1. Learn to speak loudly and clearly if you are shy. Character can be strengthened by taking on more responsibility. This will expand your own knowledge base and horizons. Start by evaluating how you communicate with other people. If you are normally afraid to speak up, make an effort to speak clearly so that your voice can be heard.

      • Perhaps you are additionally involved in the choir and have a good taste in music. If you feel strongly that a certain music should be used at an upcoming event, say so and make sure your explanations are clear.
      • Participate in more meetings at work. People will be more receptive if you communicate your ideas to them clearly and confidently.
    2. Let others speak first if you are normally the talkative type. You can show your leadership skills by showing restraint. If you are usually very talkative, try letting other people be heard as well. Then you will have a chance to think and give a thoughtful answer.

      • For example, you set a goal to learn Spanish language. Reveal best ways achieve this goal and start working in this direction.
      • You can enroll in a Spanish course at a local college or take a special online course. You can also use special software products for learning the language.
      • Keep track of exactly what you do. Don't forget to celebrate your successes.
      • Working towards clear goals will help you develop the discipline that is integral part strong character.
    3. Ask for help when you need it. Some people see asking for help as a sign of weakness. In fact, this is a demonstration of strength of character, since by doing this you show that you are able to identify and evaluate your needs. At the same time, your requests should always be specific and understandable.

      • Instead of telling your partner at length that you need help with the housework, try saying, "It would be nice if you could take care of the laundry and walk the dog occasionally."
    4. Highlight other people's strengths. Moral support is a great way to cheer everyone up, including yourself. Good leaders know that support affects people better than aggressive bullying. Be sure to communicate with the team of people assigned to you and make sure that they understand that you value the contribution of each of them.

      • Emphasize people's strengths so they can grow from them. For example, you could say, "You have a real talent for preparing presentations! Would you like to speak on behalf of all of us?"
      • Focus on the success of the team as a whole, not your own success. Talk to management about your team using “we” rather than “I”.
      • Adviсe
        • Identify specific traits of your character that need to be developed.
        • Remember that your own understanding of the definition " a strong character” does not have to match anyone else's understanding.

“Some, when they see an abyss, think of the abyss, while others imagine a bridge across it.”

In our environment, people with a pronounced weak or always stand out. It should be noted that such people are not common. Most, as a rule, combine in their character traits like strong personalities, and weak, while the character of each person is inherent distinctive features and individual characteristics.

Let's try to describe a person with a strong character.

Steve Jobs

A person with a strong character in any situation seeks to see not a problem, but an opportunity. Steve Jobs, founder Apple said:

“I'm the only person who knows what it's like to lose a quarter of a billion dollars in a year. It's very good at shaping the personality."

A strong person is distinguished by perseverance, desire and desire to achieve their goals, perseverance and patience. These people usually know well what they want to achieve in life in general, as well as in every specific situation in particular. They are confident in their abilities. They take responsibility for all their actions, and do not blame the people around them, circumstances, fate, etc. This helps them to confidently move towards their goal, they are not stopped by obstacles. As a rule, their actions, their actions are well thought out in advance, planned and aimed at solving each specific problem, since the strong man perceives difficulties as tasks that can and should be solved. AT difficult situation he does not give up, does not whine, does not complain, but seeks to find the most optimal solution. His motto:

"When it seems like the whole world is against you, remember that the plane takes off against the wind."

An example of a strong character is the so-called ““.

With a representative of a weak character, everything is exactly the opposite. The owner of this character has traits that are directly opposite to those described above.

If a strong character is perseverance, determination, perseverance, perseverance, then weak character- uncertainty, weak will, unpredictability of actions and behavior in general, the desire to shift responsibility to others. A person with a weak character lacks the strength and will to achieve his goals, he is easily influenced by others, is not able to defend his opinion, cannot resist anyone or anything. As a consequence, his behavior is often unpredictable, as he is driven by his environment and the people around him. Unable to resist the environment, a person with a weak character chooses the path of least resistance, even to the detriment of his desires and his comfort.

Such a division of characters into weak and strong, of course, is very arbitrary. Moreover, most often in everyday life the phrase “person with character” means a person with a strong character, able to behave independently, consistently, purposefully, regardless of the surrounding people and circumstances.

Dreams and real success are reached by those who have enough firmness in character, and weaklings remain on the sidelines. Only a firm and strong character helps to achieve your goals in life. How to develop a stronger character and strong moral discipline?

How to develop a strong character

Know what makes character solid

Strength of character is made up of qualities that allow you to control your instincts and desires, master yourself and have the ability to keep yourself from the many temptations that you constantly encounter in everyday life.

Moreover, strength of character is freedom from prejudices and stereotypes, and includes the ability to show and feel tolerance, love and respect for other people.

Understand why a strong character is important to you

Toughness of character allows you to freely pursue your goals and at the same time builds your resilience to failure. She helps you achieve your goals.

Having a strong personality allows you to analyze and investigate the reasons for failures, instead of just complaining about them, as other people do.

A strong character gives you the courage to admit your shortcomings, frivolity and weaknesses.
It allows you to withstand any changes in the situation and continue to move forward, regardless of the obstacles.

Empathize

The most important step in developing a strong character is to learn to empathize with other people, especially those who are weaker than you, and to love other people as you love yourself. This skill can cost you dearly, as you will have to carefully examine your motives in order to be able to empathize unselfishly.

Empathy differs from empathy in that empathy requires your direct involvement in other people's lives (get into the person's life and help them clear the way), while empathy involves an emotional but passive response without active participation and self-giving.

Looking for the truth

Prefer reason over ordinary emotion. A person with a strong character explores all the facts with his head and does not give in to prejudices and emotions. Resolve most questions only by reasoning. Avoid the chaos of your sensations by realizing that despite the fact that "tastes do not argue," reason must always win with the help of factual evidence and arguments.

Don't be a pessimist or an optimist

Be the leader. The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects the end of the storm, and the leader adjusts the sails and prepares them for any weather.

Beware of irrational impulses

Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas believed that there are seven human feelings: love and hate, desire and fear, happiness and sadness, and anger. While not bad on their own, these emotions often overwhelm our intelligence and cause us to indulge in the wrong things: overeat, be irrationally afraid of something, or let sadness or anger consume us.

In fact, the answer to any question can only be found in the rationality of decisions and in the practice of good habits aimed at releasing emotions. Excessive and sensual appetites are a sign of a weak character, while the ability to withhold (suspend) reward and practice self-control indicate strength of character.

Be happy with what you have

Appreciate your own worth. The notion that the grass is always greener somewhere else will ensure you a miserable life; remember that this is only a projection of your ideas about how other people live. Better to focus on how you live.

Dare to take (deliberate) risk

If you avoid battles, you deprive yourself of both victory and all the blessings that come with it. Do not be cowardly, aloof, and do not walk away from your duties, but be bold to make your contribution to the advancement of mankind.

Each person is driven by their own interests, whether subconsciously or consciously. Do not force anyone to do what you want, but do not allow others to impose their opinion on you. Understand and accept the fact that different people will offer you different solutions the same question, and that you can't please everyone. Find the right path and follow it without turning left or right. Manage yourself and never deviate from the right path.

Learn to do good and shun/avoid evil

Seek peace and strive for it sincerely. Pursue not personal goals that trample on the needs of others, but noble and worthy motives that will benefit the whole society. If you pursue your personal goals, you will get into conflicts with other people and, in the end, you will definitely fail. If you work for the common good, it will benefit everyone, and you will be able to satisfy your personal goals at the same time.

Learn to master your emotions

Let nothing but common sense influence your daily decisions and actions. It can often be difficult, sometimes almost impossible, for you not to give in to emotions, but you can learn to suppress them with manifestations and transcend them, relying on prudence and common sense.

Be neither wasteful nor stingy, but find a middle ground

Ability to find golden mean- This is a sign of a strong character that can withstand extremes.

Always keep calm

Tranquility is a state that allows you to concentrate and redistribute your diverging thoughts and meditate to your advantage. Thinking leads to ideas, ideas lead to opportunities, opportunities lead to success. Calmness is the sine qua non of a strong character. Without peace, there is no willpower. Without peace, desires can ignite very quickly, turning into an invincible passion and hindering sound thinking. Calmness is not the enemy of emotions, but a regulating force that allows their correct expression.

Focus on the positive things in life

Once a doctor, to whom a young girl came, complaining of various diseases and praying for a cure, said to her: “Do not think about them; it is the most effective of all medicines." Physical and mental pain can be eased by a single effort of the will, directing thoughts into other channels, or intensified by continuing to think about it.

Resist fatalism

Each person is fully responsible for their own development and destiny. If you adopt fatalism, that is, if you believe that fate is somehow predetermined and unchanging, you will discourage yourself from any attempt to improve your life and your character. Fate is blind and deaf; she will never hear or see us. Better remember that fixing bugs and changing own destiny in better side are sure steps towards developing a strong character and improving your life in general. Pursue your own happiness; don't wait for something or someone to bring it to you because it won't happen if you don't persevere.

Have patience

Have the patience to enthusiastically set, pursue and achieve your goals, whether short term or long term: that is, making progress (success). Success is progress, not the final destination. A person with a strong character will not give up when he meets obstacles in his path. He will persevere to the very end and overcome all obstacles. Learn to suspend the rewards of life, learn to wait as you progress, and understand that time can be your friend, that it can be used to learn and grow. Also know what battles you should get involved in, and when it is better to retreat; sometimes retreat means accepting the gift of life rather than clinging to a sinking ship.

Conquer all fears

Indecision is a serious obstacle to success. Do not allow prejudices based on superficial observations into your life. Accept facts that are based solely on common sense. Don't lay your foundation on sand, but rather build on solid rock. By overcoming fear, you will gain the strength of character that will allow you to think, make decisions, and act like a true winner.

Eradicate weak thoughts

Just as a gardener must clear the ground of weeds in order to allow his garden to grow, so you must eradicate all weak thoughts that, like weeds, sap your strength. Beware of over-emotionalism and give emotions only their true significance. When you notice that some overwhelming emotion is tormenting you, immediately occupy yourself with something for fifteen minutes, preferably an hour. Many great wars lost their lives because they reacted too boldly to insults and went into battle too early against their offenders, without proper training, acting with extreme temper and thoughtlessness. Learn to overcome such weaknesses over time, remembering that anger is a common vice among people with a weak character.

Be smart

Practice calmness, prudence, discernment and prudence in business. Develop logical thinking and use it in your work.

Be truthful in everything and in all aspects of life

If you are not truthful, you lie, first of all, to yourself, and this will certainly affect your character.

Be the best

Be the best wherever you are and always try to do your best. Work hard and avoid idleness like the plague. At the same time, learn to appreciate good vacation for its ability to restore your strength and inspire you to return to your good deeds every time.

  • Be disciplined and control yourself. Run from bad impulses (including habits and actions that you later regret) - and compulsive behaviors that become habits and distort the character.
  • Be a man of your word and avoid the temptation to lie; honesty maintains a strong character. Also learn to make decisions without fear.
  • Be happy. Happiness is health. Happiness gives you the strength to overcome the monotony and get rid of boredom in life. It allows you to make the best of every situation. Happiness is a state of mind. It has been observed that poor people smile much more often than Wall Street rich people.
  • Fulfill physical exercise to develop resilience. Mind and body are interconnected. Train your physical stamina to strengthen your mental stamina.
  • Be good friend. Dedicate yourself to your friends and be prepared to make sacrifices for them. Never hold a grudge or pay attention to petty incidents. Live in harmony with other people. Do not be selfish: always take into account the interests of other people.

Character, from the Greek word "χαρακτήρα", was originally a term for the characters imprinted on coins. Nowadays, character refers to the set of all qualities, such as courage, truthfulness, devotion and directness, that a person possesses. Character is perhaps the most important thing a person can have, as it defines the very essence of people. To develop a more solid character means to make yourself a more productive person within a certain area of interest or a certain profession. This article is a collection of tips on how to develop a stronger character and strong moral discipline.

1. Know what makes character strong. Once a doctor, to whom a young girl came, complaining of various diseases and praying for a cure, said to her: "Do not think about them; this is the most effective of all medicines." Physical and mental pain can be eased by a single effort of the will, directing thoughts into other channels, or intensified by continuing to think about it.

15. Resist fatalism. Each person is fully responsible for their own development and destiny. If you embrace fatalism, that is, if you believe that fate is somehow predetermined and unchanging, you will discourage yourself from any attempt to improve your life and your character. Fate is blind and deaf; she will never hear or see us. Better remember that correcting mistakes and changing your own destiny for the better are the right steps towards developing a strong character and improving your life in general. Pursue your own happiness; don't wait for something or someone to bring it to you, because it won't happen if you don't persevere.

16. Have patience - to enthusiastically set, pursue and achieve your goals, whether they are short-term or long-term: that is, to make progress (success). Success is progress, not the final destination. A person with a strong character will not give up when he meets obstacles on his way, but will be persistent to the very end and overcome all obstacles.

17. Conquer all fears. Indecision is a serious obstacle to success. Do not allow prejudices based on superficial observations into your life, but accept facts that are based solely on common sense. Don't lay your foundation on sand, but rather build on solid rock. By overcoming fear, you will gain the strength of character that will allow you to think, make decisions, and act like a true winner.

18. Just as a gardener must clear the ground of weeds in order to allow his garden to grow, so you must eradicate all weak thoughts that, like weeds, undermine your strength. Beware of over-emotionalism and give emotions only their true significance. When you notice that some overwhelming emotion is tormenting you, immediately occupy yourself with something for fifteen minutes, preferably an hour. Many great wars lost their lives because they reacted too boldly to offenses and went into battle too early against their offenders, without proper training, acting with extreme temper and thoughtlessness. Learn to overcome such weaknesses over time, remembering that anger is a common vice among people with a weak character.

19. Practice calmness, prudence, discernment and prudence in business. Develop logical thinking and use it in your work.

20. Be truthful in everything and in all aspects of life. If you are not truthful, you lie, first of all, to yourself, and this will certainly affect your character.

21. And finally, be the best wherever you are, and always try to do everything as best as possible. Work hard and avoid idleness like the plague. At the same time, learn to appreciate a good rest for its ability to rejuvenate you and inspire you to return to your good deeds every time.
